Carrera Family

The Carrera brothers (Javiera, Juan José, José Miguel and Luis), sons of Don Ignacio de la Carrera and Paula Verdugo, were active participants of the battle for Chile’s Independence. Among the brothers, Jose Miguel de la Carrera y Verdugo, was the most outstanding fighter in the battle for independence. He was Chief of State and First General in Chief of the Army. He’s also considered as the first Caudillo (leader) in Chile’s republican history and also one of the first ones in America.

All the brothers, except Javiera, were executed in Mendoza, Argentina, because of the internal struggles among the patriots. Dona Javiera recovered their bodies in 1928 and she gave them proper burials.
